Skin gets its colour from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. When those cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. Laser hair removal or IPL (intense pulse light) is a well-established method for treating unwanted or excessive hair. The laser applicator is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released, which targets many follicles simultaneously. The laser produces a ray of high intensity light which gives off heat energy, heating the pigment and destroying the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding cell, preventing any further hair growth.
Hair has a three stage life cycle, starting with the growth stage, and only hairs that are in the growth stage will be destroyed by the laser. Therefore a course of 3-6 treatments, a month apart, is recommended in order to maximise results.
